Guys Of A Certain Age

Believe it or don’t, The Guys get serious this week.  Mostly.  These days there are serious things happening in all our universes, be they parallel or inverse, and The Guys are serious about them.  Seriously. 

The world appears to be opening up as the curve shows signs of flattening (hello, flat earth fans and listeners!), but is the world we are opening up to the same one we had when it closed?  Art checks in for the Geek of the Week segment from parts unknown, then signs off for the holiday weekend.

That leaves The Boys (just keeping it real) to ponder out loud the changes that have come in life, business, and eating - especially the eating - and prognosticate a bit about whether or not those changes will stick around in the universe of the new normal.

The guys venture into the DC Multiverse and talk all things DC, which does cover much more than Art's beloved DC Universe. 

The geeks' geeks include an ode to the father of Scooby Doo, a documentary about a decade's old fan film (on VHS!), and the direction of Jay-fav Quibi after he dumped them unceremoniously a few eps back.

No guys were harmed in this recording.  But we wouldn't remember if they were anyway. You'll have to listen to verify...

The Guys got the band back together this week (i.e., they let Jay back into the studio), and they even have a Plus One!  

The subject is breakfast cereal, and the guest is Art’s lifelong friend, George Abide. George is in the food biz, and has an insider’s philosophy of cereal. Yep, that’s right.  It’s finally time to talk about what we all loved (maybe still love?) to eat while watching those Saturday morning cartoons we recently discussed.  

Culture, relationships, and individuality are all part of the picture.  And you thought it was just about sugar-coating, tiny marshmallows, and toys in the box.  Listen as they dig deep in the cereal bag to find the prize.  

This week the Guys have an Epic conversation about a certain game that is challenging Apple's app store business model.

Just like the prime time preview shows of old, the Guys have been teasing this episode for a while now. 

Finally, they are talking cartoons, and it's not just The Clone Wars or Batman, the Animated Series.  Nope, this collection of rambling thoughts is all about classic Saturday morning cartoons (and a few live action shows, just to keep it interesting.)  The late 60's, 70's and early 80's were the golden years of cartoons and if they appeared on one of the major networks on a Saturday, you can bet one of the Guys was up early watching it. 

From Jonny Quest to Grape Ape, the Guys sacrificed that precious childhood sleep just so they could sit too close to the television for hours on end.  Naturally, you're going to want to listen to them talk about it for at least half an hour, right?

The Guys are once again without the full crew. This time it's Jay who's missing, but Robbie and Art find a way to ramble through some very-nearly-interesting material.

It's summertime!  And the Guys are hungry for summer foods. 

Art departed to departs unknown (aka Georgia), so it's up to Jay and Robbie to guide the listeners to all of summer's favorite edibles.  They cover everything from strawberries (and ice cream), peaches (and ice cream), tomatoes (no ice cream), to corn.  (Yes, Jay has made corn ice cream before, but this episode focuses on the grilled variety.)

Belly up to the podcast with your audible appetite and get hungry with the Guys. 

Who’s watching the Watchmen?  The Guys are, that’s who.  And they’ve watched all the Watchmen, if reading the comics as they came along  in the late 80’s or digesting them all in the graphic novel later in life (hello, Jay) count as watching, too. 

The Guys wax nostalgic about the 2009 Snyder feature film and compare notes on HBO’s recent-ish television sequel.  All the Watchmen didn’t come back in the TV series, but there were enough to convince Jay to get HBO Max .. for a little while, at least.

This week the Guys are talking Bad Sequels. 

"We’re the Guys of a Certain Age, and we’re the darn fools that talk about him!”

If you didn’t hear that line while watching Hamilton on Disney+ on July 3, it’s okay - they sing really fast. Yes, that’s right, the most talked-about musical of the past half-decade finally made it to the small screen, and just in time to give Disney+ the post-Mandalorian boost they needed. And now that the Guys have taken it on as a topic, their ratings and subscriptions are bound to skyrocket. (Disney+, that is. Maybe the podcast, too?) The Guys talk word count, history, awards, and yes - a little tech.
