Guys Of A Certain Age

Connery.  Sean Connery.  Hands down, The Guys’ favorite James Bond actor.  

The world is shaken (not stirred) at Connery’s passing.  But as true fans know, he also made a great king, Robin Hood, astronaut, sub captain, explorer, writer, and overall hero.  Not a bad career for a former coffin-polisher.  

Before The Guys get to serious Sean business, they geek out on Oreo security, the cool things you find when moving houses, and the perpetuation of a Marvel rumor they’d like to see come true.  

It’s that time of year - time for the War of the Worlds.  The real one, we mean - not the one waged on Jay’s jokes every week.  

Well, real might not be the right word.  The Guys are marking the anniversary of Orson Welles’ broadcast of the H.G. Wells story with a look to the history of the event, the movies that came later, and Art’s involvement in a current iteration.  

In the Geeks of the Week segment, Art just can’t escape DC Universe, Jay talks big-time dollars, Robbie schedules his 2021 Saturday mornings, and cousin-of-the-show Mervin calls in with a kinda and gentle response to Jake’s gaming opinions.  

Do you want to play a game?  Or would you be just as happy watching other people play games on TV?  Game shows have been around since long before The Guys were of any age, much less a certain one.  And some of them keep coming back.  (Jay loves it when the dead game shows come back.)  

From Match Game to the Wheel of Fortune, these shows are entertainment and education and let’s face it - we’re addicted.

This week it’s Art’s turn to play hooky, and in his absence, Jake Jones - co-host of Chortlecast over at chortlegames.com - takes over the mic with a gaming update in our extended Geeks of the Week segment.  

Don’t know which new system to buy?  Jake knows all.  Jake tells all. Then the Guys turn to Halloween.  Jay thinks it’s really just another chance to celebrate all things Reese’s, and tells the tale of his most memorable costume party, where he won the prize for “Favorite Among 2-year-olds.”  

Robbie guides the Guys through their favorite Halloween-themed movies - thankfully, they don’t have to be horror to be enjoyed on All Hallows Eve.  

In this episode, the Guys have an especially scary treat in store for you. And no, it's not that Jay is once again MIA.

Geeks of the Week include news about Spiderman 3, Wonder Woman 84, Lord of the Rings, The Expanse, and of course, Captain Janeway.

And then...get ready. Robbie and Art are here to chew bubble gum and .... talk scary movies, and they're all out of bubble gum.

The Guys are joined by horror movie aficionado, Brittany "the Boss" Goss, who shares her favorite horror movies and thoughts on just what makes a good scary flick. Robbie and Art share some of their favorites as well, so check it out and see if we're frighteningly close or off in some phantom dimension when it comes to your own selections. 

The Jayster takes over the studio and dives into one of his passions- food.  Specifically how to prepare and cook it.

Jay’s geek-dom when it comes to all things food is fully manifested in an interview with T.J. Manna, a local baker-cook-pastry chef: in other words, a full-on food nerd.

Back in the 80’s, when Guys (and Gals) of a Certain Age were being molded and shaped for the future (i.e., NOW), did you ever watch a movie and think, “This is just like my life.”  

You know, movies like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Mystic Pizza, or War Games?  Maybe not.  Maybe we just wished they were.  Meanwhile, we aged, the actors aged, and now we are left to wonder (perhaps because the Guys have too much time to think), where would those characters be now?  Are the Goonies still friends?  Did they spend all their treasure in one place?  

Sometimes we get to find out…or we will when theaters fully reopen…with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Cobra Kai, Top Gun: Maverick, and most importantly, Bill & Ted Face the Music.  

This week Jay and Art imagine what life might look like for the folks from St. Elmo’s Fire and the Princess Bride, and Robbie…well, Robbie didn’t quite get the memo, but has lots to say about Mad Men.  And since it’s his studio, they let him.  

Once again the Guys are without Jay for this podcast. Rumor has it, he's auditioning for a podcast musical.

Robbie and Art soldier on without him, dispensing Geeks of the Week knowledge on the new WandaVision trailer, a possible Spinal Tap sequel, and an old CRT television set that wipes out WiFi in Wales — or at least a small village there.

If the Guys ever showed their full geek status, it's in this episode all about science fairs. 

Art converts wine to wind, Jay gets back to nature with a side of gas, but Robbie - Robbie took science fairs seriously. He may not have been cool, but his project definitely was. He started in third grade and truth be told, is probably still working on it. 

Geeks of the Week range from Pod-Way musicals, a table read with a blast from the past, and at last we find out who will play She-Hulk. And that's a relief: one day they may need a good green lawyer.  Break out that volcano in your attic and reminisce with the Guys.
