Guys Of A Certain Age

DON'T LISTEN IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN "Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker!"  There Be Spoilers Ahead!

This week the Guys show their true dedication to the podcast.  As a group, with sons in tow, they all went to see The Rise of Skywalker (Jay saw all but 3 minutes of it), then hopped in their landspeeders and dashed directly to the studio to record their thoughts (aka rambles) on the final movie of the Star Wars series.  Allegedly.  

Buckle up for “bonus" minutes of their conversation, and yes - THERE ARE SPOILERS AFOOT!  

The holiday season is drawing to a close, and that means one thing: we have to get back to regular eating, whatever that may mean.  

But not before Robbie and Jay bring in a genuine teen chef to talk about holiday meals.  While Art left so he could actually make it home in time for dinner, Mark Coblentz took his seat at the microphone to talk family food traditions.   Mark happens to be Robbie’s son, but we don’t hold that against him.  His resume includes Chopped Jr., MasterChef Jr, Wonderama, Making a Chef, and now he’s reached the pinnacle of his career: guest appearance on Guys of a Certain Age.  And he makes it through the entire episode without being grounded!  

The best Christmas gift we could ever give!

It’s the golden anniversary, the Jubilee episode: Guys of a Certain Age is 50!  

And what better to discuss on such an auspicious anniversary than a variety of random topics.  Skywalker is about to rise, Christmas TV episodes are showing, Threat Level Midnight makes its debut, and somehow we still work in Dr. Who (a brief mention) and Isaac Asimov.  Jay shares a couple of mind-blowing things he’s learned since beginning this journey, and Art gives a mini concert.  Join us for an episode we never saw coming.

It seems The Guys just can’t tear themselves away from the screen.  It’s Christmas time - the time for getting together with family and friends and thinking about the deeper meaning behind the holiday - and there’s so much more TV to watch, too.  

Even the Geeks of the Week are screen-related: Robbie talks about Crisis on Infinite Earths, Jay found a Netflix show about toys, and Art mentions the new Wonder Woman 1984 trailer.  Then they dive into a spirited discussion of must-watch Christmas movies.   Robbie’s choice is a hill to die hard upon, Jay’s fave relates to a collection he has (no shock), and Art goes deep into the archives to find movies made way before even they were born.  Listen - then watch.  

It’s the Christmas season, but that doesn’t mean this episode isn’t evergreen.  This week The Guys share practical tips!  All of us are old married Guys and that means one thing this time of year: figuring out how to choose just the right gifts for our wives.  Some are traditions - that makes it easy.  But those extras?  The surprise gift that you hope will wow your woman?  Well, that’s more of a challenge, and Jay shares a cautionary tale of a time he didn’t choose wisely.  Listen while wassailing.  

Technology.  We can't live with it, and we can't shoot it.  (Isn't that how the saying goes?) 

Ironically, on the day the Guys decided to talk about tech fails, the podcast equipment went a little squirrelly  But they (and by "they" we mean Robbie) got it working again so they (and by "they" we mean all the Guys) could get their curmudgeon on and grip about the ups and downs of society's dependence on technology. 

Be it fruit-based upgrade requirements or simple power outages, tech fails are inevitable, and the Guys have something to say about it.  

Did somebody say pizza?  It doesn’t take much to get the Guys talking about one of their favorite foods, the almighty pizza pie. Crusts are considered and sauces debated.

They chat about cheese choices and ponder the pineapple as an acceptable topping. Jay says there’s no bad pizza, only varying degrees of goodness, but Robbie throws him a St Louis curve.

Then there’s the battle between chain and local. And the winner? Pizza. And, of course, our listeners. 

2019 ain’t what it used to be. Or at least it’s not quite what Blade Runner thought it would be.

Or is it?

Now that we’ve just about made it through the year, the Guys take a look at the pictures painted by that and other movies and discuss how many things they got right, and how much they absolutely missed.

In their Geek o’ the Week segment, Robbie gets transparent, Jay is looking forward to a feline film that doesn’t involve Catwoman, and Art pontificates on the finer points of celebrity Halloween costumes.

With Jay out, this week's episode finds Robbie and Art being joined by our favorite "Guy of a Much Younger Age", Jake Jones.

In the Geek of the Week segment, Jake shares his plans for a livestream fundraising event to benefit the Blair E Baston Children’s Hospital, and we try to picture a bald Jake. Robbie shares a recent story about NVIDIA AI applying deepfake technology to your pet's pictures.

Apparently not... Inspired by the recent statements by famed directors, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, the Guys give their takes on what defines "Cinema." Will you think it's funny? Will it amuse you? Or will the Guys end up sleeping with the fishes? Tune in and see.
